Geography
Monforte’s council territory is located at the plains in the Center-Eastern of Galicia. Its physical frame is defined by a fundamental unit: the Lemos flat ground that extends by Bóveda, O Saviñao, Pantón, Sober, Pobra do Brollón and Ribas de Sil. These territory constitutes the Lemos Valley. Its altitude is about 363 meters above the sea’s level and it’s irrigated by the Cabe river basin.
Its climate is fitted between the mild coastal climate and the sharp inland contrasts, characterized by a moderate annual temperature, low precipitations and an important thermal oscillation. The rainiest season is the autumn and the summers are dry and warm. The frosts and the fog are very usual in winter in the valley.
Population
With the arrival of the railroad at the end of the 19th century, there was a progressive growth until 1950. Since this date, a reduction in the population curve takes place. The last register gives a number of 19,817 people: 9,449 are men and 10,368 women, with a population density of 99,09 inhabitants by square kilometer. It’s the second city in number of people in Lugo province behind the capital.
Communications
Monforte as an historical crossroads, it’s well communicated with the main urban areas of Galicia, as much by highway as by railroad. It has a railway station and a bus station. By train, the city is connected with the regional axes of Ferrol-Coruña and Ourense-Vigo. By road, the local road 533 unites the Lemos capital with Lalín and Santiago. The local road 546 joins it with Lugo’s capital, where connects with the National Road 6 to A Coruña. Ourense and Vigo communicate with Monforte through the National Road 120 from Logroño to Vigo, access road to the Castilian region and, through the railway lines with regular services, to Madrid and Barcelona.
